This toolkit guides African higher education institutions in designing mutually beneficial, inclusive, and sustainable student exchange programs, in which learners study, work, or train at a partner institution for a set period while earning credit toward their home degree. Organized across six sections, it walks through the full program cycle: partnership exploration, institutional audit, site visits, program design, implementation, and evaluation. It defines exchange models such as short-term, semester-long, faculty-led, reciprocal, direct enrolment, and virtual COIL programs, and outlines objectives, guiding principles, roles, and challenges, alongside customisable templates including partnership checklists, sample MoUs, and application forms.
